Faith Without Works is Dead

I got the inspiration for this message by the Holy Ghost, from a conversation with a New Hampshire Christian, while playing a chess game. We discussed some issues about Christian responsibilities and one of the topics discussed was about works of faith. Needless to say, we didn't see the same things on this subject, because he refused to believe what our Holy Bible says about works of faith. He claimed that Jesus did all the work for our salvation, and that we no longer have to have any works to continue in God's grace. Well, let's see what our Holy Bible says about this.

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:14-26

Our initial salvation is through grace, but the Bible is very convincing that after we're saved, faith alone will not suffice. We must go on to good works after were saved, just as Ephesians 2:10 says! Let's review some of the works of faith by great examples in our Holy Bible.

By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. Hebrews 11:4

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. Hebrews 11:6-8

By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure. Hebrews 11:17 & 19

By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. Hebrews 11:24-26

By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. Hebrews 11:30-31

There are other great examples of faith with works in the book of I Samuel.

I Samuel 14:6-16, 20

I Samuel 17:32-50

Now let's look at some New Testament examples of faith accompanied by works.

And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. Luke 7:2-9

Mark 2:2-5, 10-12

Matthew 15:22-28

Notice that in all three of these passages, the people had to act on their faith and come to Jesus. He didn't go seeking them out at their homes. They had a need and, believing that He could meet that need, they moved by faith and searched Him out.

The faith and works of Mary (mother of Jesus)

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. Luke 1:30, 38, 46-52

These are works of humility & the fear of God!

The following passages are examples of men who thought they had the works of faith, but had faith only.

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. Acts 19:13-16

Matthew 17:6, 15-21

Numbers 14:40-45

IN CONCLUSION:

How do we have works of faith that God honors & will work through, for the sake of others? We know that we should follow the examples of the Old and New Testament men and women, as well as those who we have seen and have been assured of, that their faith with works is worthy of our consideration. Also, we know we have to obey all of God's word to be accepted (i.e., all that He has give to us, with understanding.) I am going to share a few scriptures that help explain to us how to have confidence that God will work His will through us for others.

Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. I John 3:21-22

There is a lot of information in those two verses:

  • If our conscience is void of offense toward God, (our heart condemns us not)
  • If we keep His commandments.
  • And do those things that are pleasing in His sight,

Then whatsoever we ask we receive of Him.

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. I John 5:14-15

  • We must ask according to His will, to know that He heareth us.

For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. Galatians 5:6

  • We must have love for our faith to work.

I Corinthians 13:1-13 Charity never fails! True love is from God!
